Pregnancy is a time when many women seek natural remedies to support their health and well-being. Herbs often seem like a safe and gentle option. Yet, some herbs can pose risks to both the mother and the developing baby. Knowing which herbs to avoid is essential to protect your pregnancy and ensure a healthy outcome.

Why some herbs are unsafe during pregnancy

Herbs contain active compounds that can affect the body in powerful ways. During pregnancy, these effects can interfere with hormone levels, uterine contractions, or fetal development. Some herbs may cause miscarriage, premature labor, birth defects, or other complications.

The safety of many herbs during pregnancy has not been well studied. Traditional use does not guarantee safety. It is best to avoid herbs known to have strong effects on the uterus or hormones, or those with toxic properties.

Common herbs to avoid during pregnancy

Not every herb that is considered unsafe during pregnancy is on this list, but I have attempted to put herbs that are commonly found in herbal formulas, cold remedies and teas. The culinary herbs listed (like sage) are fine to use to taste in recipes, but should not be juiced, used as an essential oil or taken at medicinal levels. Chinese patent products and imported Asian herbal formulae should be viewed with utmost caution during pregnancy because they are well known to contain adulterants, heavy metals, and added pharmaceutical medications frequently not listed on the label.

How to use herbs safely during pregnancy

  • Consult your healthcare provider before taking any herbs or supplements.

  • Avoid self-medicating with herbs, especially those known to affect the uterus or hormones.

  • Use herbs only in small amounts first to see how your body reacts.

  • Choose herbs with a long history of safe use during pregnancy, such as ginger for nausea or chamomile in moderation.

Signs to watch for if you have used herbs

If you have taken herbs during pregnancy and experience any of the following, seek medical advice immediately:

  • Vaginal bleeding or spotting

  • Severe abdominal pain or cramping

  • Unusual contractions or uterine tightening

  • Dizziness, nausea, or vomiting beyond typical pregnancy symptoms

Final thoughts on herbs and pregnancy

Pregnancy calls for extra caution with anything you put in your body. While herbs can offer benefits, some carry serious risks. For a list of herbs that can offer benefits during pregnancy, visit Herbs for Pregnancy. Avoid herbs known to stimulate the uterus, cause bleeding, or have toxic effects. Always check with your healthcare provider before using any herbal products.
