McKayla Vanderpool

Direct Entry Midwife (DEM)

I have been studying birth since I began my first pregnancy in 2015 and I have been serving in the birth world for the last six years; first as a doula then finally as a student midwife and home birth assistant.

My midwifery training has been through the apprenticeship model set forth by the North American Registry of Midwives. Over the past 3 years I have trained with four different preceptors with varying backgrounds, certifications, nursing degrees, and specialties but all equally amazing midwives and instructors.

The reason I became so passionate about home birth is mostly from my own experiences and in the experiences of my former doula clients. My first was born in hospital with a local midwife group; after my experience I knew that I wanted more support and a gentler birth experience, so I opted to have my next baby at home with a midwife. It was the best experience I could have asked for. After that, I knew home birth was meant for me and I wanted to continue sharing home birth with Iowa families.

When I'm not working or on call; you can find me at home with my husband of 10 years and our four wonderful kids, enjoying quality family time, taking mini weekend family trips, home remodeling, researching and continuing my education, and learning more about herbs in pregnancy and women’s health.
